First-message ideas
The easiest dating messages are specific, kind, and simple to answer. MatchICK gives you shared icks and profile prompts so you do not have to start from a blank box.
Start with the shared ick
A shared ick is a ready-made conversation hook. You already know the other person noticed the same behaviour, so ask about it in a way that invites a story.
Try: We both chose people who make vague plans. Is that an instant no for you, or do they get one warning?
This works because it is easy to answer with a joke, a real opinion, or a short story.
Use a profile detail, not a compliment alone
-
Better: Ask about the place, activity, pet, outfit, hobby, or prompt shown in the profile.
-
Better: Connect the profile detail to one of your own experiences.
-
Riskier: Opening only with appearance. It gives the other person little to reply to.
-
Best: Keep it warm, specific, and short enough to answer quickly.
Simple opener formulas
-
Shared ick + playful question: 'We both picked loud chewing. Cinema snacks: brave or banned?'
-
Prompt detail + curiosity: 'Your profile says Sunday roast is sacred. Pub roast or home roast?'
-
Photo detail + light invite: 'That coffee spot looks serious. Worth the queue?'
-
Preference match + context: 'You also like low-key first dates. Coffee walk or tiny bar?'
What to avoid
-
Copy-paste openers that could be sent to anyone.
-
Pressure to meet before a normal conversation has started.
-
Sexual messages before trust and consent are clear.
-
Negging, insults, or jokes that rely on making the other person smaller.
Keep the tone human
A good first message does not need to be perfect. It just needs to show you read the profile and are treating the other person like a person.
If the conversation flows, great. If it does not, move on respectfully.
